On the 9 August 2002 (NZ) Yahoo
(affectionately known as Yahell) released Yahoo Messenger 5.5 in beta,
since then a few production releases have come out but it seems many have
their own "quirks" no more so than the latest release 5501237 which has
many failing to connect...
Problems we're
hearing about...
failure to connect
(1237)...
thanks to Matrix1873 the problem seems to be caused by
yupdater.exe
(C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\yupdater.exe)
there
are two ways for dealing with this, either do as Matrix suggests and
prevent it via your firewall or take Wolf's suggestion and rename it to
YUpdate.exe.old either way will work :)

  v5.5 bring us 64 smileys to play with, 35 are on the
drop down menu, the remaining are "hidden" and some of the old have been
revamped and are now animated... all in all they're pretty dang cool! How
to present them has been a bit of a drama due the
 fact that there are so many of them (not that we're
complaining!) so what we've done is prepare a few pages for you in
different styles,  formats and size. [Smileys ONLY] is a
straight graphic with the smileys in one looong list. [Smiley Info] is a
breakdown of the drop down menu
 (with key combos)
 and we feature all the animated smileys which have
been put into a continuous loop (to prevent them expiring before the page
finishes loading). Towards the end of the week we'll be putting the main
table up that you can cut and paste the key combos from it so stay tuned
 for that. If you're a subscriber to our [newsletter] then with
volume one you would have received a complete set of tables detailing them
 all, over 4 pages, (one of which was printable) that
you can store on your computer for easy reference. Over time the
newsletters may get posted to the site but for now you need to be a [subscriber] to get
your hands on our latest news :)

you don't want to miss out on this one! The
MUST HAVE program for YIM 5.5
users is [YEmote] by Andy
(creator of CamGrab). This is THE program you've been waiting for, it's
basically a portable, clickable menu of the secret smileys and animated
smileys that you can dock beside your IM window.. 2 clicks and your smiley
is in the text field ready to roll out the door. originally posted in
